The Emerald Coast of Florida (near Pensacola) is one big beach town as the whole coast is basically white sand beach. So, for this part of our trip, we have been hanging out at the beach.
The skies have been clear and blue, the sand dazzling white and the temperature a very pleasant 25C.
Our favorite site has been the Gulf Islands National Seashore. It is an idyllic long strip of protected beach with a paved road down the middle and a speed limit of 25 miles per hour. It is perfect place to cycle then hang out at the beach where we had lunch, walked the beach and read our books.
We even got to a driving range.
However, getting here was a very a different story.
We left New Orleans thinking it was about a three-to-four-hour drive (depending on our speed and traffic). But it turned into an endurance test as there was a wild windstorm across the whole gulf coast that lasted all day and played havoc with the drive.
For the most part the winds were pushing us along, so it wasn’t an issue with overtaxing the vehicle by pulling the trailer into the wind.
The issue was that with every bridge crossing, every exposed place on the highway and every time a big truck passed us, we were unpredictably blown around.
It was like driving a bucking bronco for over five hours, never knowing which way you had to correct next.
Thankfully we got here in one piece and the weather since has been perfect.
Our next two days are travel days as we make our way to Savannah Georgia for some southern hospitality.
Be safe!
Thanks.
